GLADSTONE, Ore. – The tide came in on the Willamette River, causing a car to sink at Meldrum Bar Park in Gladstone Saturday.

The owners of the sunken car were stuck on top and were rescued by a passing boater.

“The Willamette is influenced by tide and people don't realize that. And this is how accidents like this happen. Sadly we had somebody drown here several months ago for the same reason” said Jamie Karn with the Clackamas Fire District.

High water also stranded several other cars on the bar.

“This river will rise depending on rain, snow melt, you can see the tidal influence anywhere between three and six feet. It just depends on what's happening with the weather,” Karn said.
