YACHATS, Ore. – South Eugene High School planned to honor two students who drowned at the Oregon Coast during Wednesday night’s basketball game.

Jack Harnsongkram, 17, and Connor Gregory Ausland, 18, drowned Saturday in the surf off Smelt Sands State Park near Yachats.

The boys were part of a group of teens on the south end of the beach near the Adobe Resort. Some had been throwing footballs and frisbees on rocks jutting into the surf when three teens were knocked into the surf by high waves. One teen managed to get out safely.

Witnesses said the surf was very rough at the park that day.

Memorials have been set up for both students:

Donations in memory of Connor were being taken by Oregon community fund, It's a memorial college scholarship for a scholar athlete from South Eugene High School. More: Oregoncf.org

 Donations in memory of Jack were directed to: Eugene Education fund, Food for Lane County and Lane Shelter Community.
