TROUTDALE -- A 14-year-old boy heard screams and rushed to the rescue of a young child stranded inside a burning home in Troutdale Tuesday.
The fire broke out next door to the SW Hewitt home of Marcos Ugarte. He and his father raced over. A 7-year-old boy was screaming for help out an upstairs window.
The boy's own father had tried to rescue him, but the child had locked his door from the inside and then thick smoke filled the second floor.

Marcos said he had to keep trying. In a reaction he described as "just instinct," he grabbed a ladder and scampered up to the room where the child was trapped.
"I told the kid to come out feet first and I grabbed him," Marcos told KGW, "and then I gave him to the lady standing downstairs."
The child was taken to the hospital and released after treatment for smoke inhalation.
Marcos is a freshman at Gresham High School. He said he just knew it was the right thing to do.
The child's father, You Ma, expressed gratitude afterwards.
"You know, I want to say, 'thank you to you very much for saving my son. Thank you,'" Ma told KGW.
