BURNS, Ore. – A 14-year-old boy died after his bicycle crashed into the side of a semi-truck in Burns Thursday morning, police said.
Jonathan “JP” Ptacek rode through a stop sign and into the side of the semi-trailer as it was traveling through the intersection of West B Street and Highway 20, according to Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
The teen crashed after hitting the semi and then the trailer's tires ran over him, Hastings said.
Ptacek was flown in an AirLink helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend where he was pronounced deceased after arrival.
The driver of the semi-truck said he didn’t realize that the teen had hit his trailer until he saw the bicycle in his side mirror lying in the roadway. Then, he immediately stopped and saw the injured victim, Hastings said.
He added that the driver “cooperated fully with investigators and there is no indication he was at fault.”
Investigators said the bicyclists' speed was also a factor in the crash.
