EUGENE, Ore. -- Tips led to the arrest in North Portland Thursday of the so-called "Tall Man" bandit, according to FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele.

The FBI had offered a $2,000 reward to help catch the Lane County bank robber, dubbed the Tall Man bandit because his height was estimated at 6-foot-3. He was accused of robbing six banks in the Eugene-Springfield area over the course of five weeks, mostly inside grocery stores.

Investigators on Wednesday identified him as 25-year-old Chet Evans, and urged anyone who had tips about his whereabouts to contact police. FBI special agents arrested him without incident near North Interstate Avenue and North Sumner Street just before 11 a.m. Thursday.

He was charged in connection with the latest holdup, Monday at a Key Bank in Eugene, but Steele said he is the suspect in the other five robberies.

Steele said tips helped lead to Evans' arrest, but did not give further details.
