PORTLAND – Every player from both Portland Catholic school teams who left the dugout during a fight at a baseball game Thursday will be suspended.
A Central Catholic High School player slid into home plate and collided with a Jesuit High School catcher in the 5th inning.
The game had to be stopped when both benches cleared during the ensuing brawl.
According to the high-school rule, if a player leaves the dugout or his position during a fight, he's ejected from the game and must sit out the following game.
Jesuit Athletic Director Mike Hughes confirmed the Oregon School Activities Association said it would enforce the rule for every player who left the bench.
“Rules are rules, and the policy is clear that if you leave the dugout during a conflict, you are ejected from the game and suspended for the next game,” said Hughes. “That might be a tough lesson for our students to learn, but we will use this situation to help our athletes learn to control emotions, follow the rules of baseball and show good sportsmanship at all times.”
