SALEM, Ore.  -- A Salem man accused of murder in a fatal confrontation in a Walmart parking lot had been released from the county jail three weeks earlier because of overcrowding.

The Salem Statesman Journal reports that 41-year-old Mark Edward Brown faced methamphetamine possession charges when he was released on Aug. 11. He had been booked and released on the same day, according to the jail commander.

The paper said forgery and identity charges also were pending. Brown was arrested Tuesday in the killing the previous day of 28-year-old Bryan John Lee Knorr.

Police said it appeared the suspect was waiting for Knorr. The police spokesman, Lt. Dave Okada, says he doesn't know the nature of the relationship between the men, but the killing was not done at random.

Brown is now being held in the high security section of the Marion County Jail.
