PORTLAND – Officers arrested a man who dropped a switchblade while struggling with them outside a dentist office in North Portland early Sunday.

Just after 12:30 a.m., police saw 30-year-old Thomas Berry hiding in the bushes outside Frohnmayer Dental at 5228 North Lombard Street, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau.

Berry tried to punch an officer in the face when they confronted him. After a brief struggle, Berry dropped the knife and was taken into custody, Simpson said.

As Berry was being put in the patrol car, police said he kicked an officer in the chest.

Police then looked around the building and found cut window screens and pry marks that they said were consistent with someone trying to break in.

Berry was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of attempted burglary, assault and criminal mischief.
