VANCOUVER -- Scientists have started installing super-sensitive seismic monitors around Mount St. Helens as part of a two-year study of the magma under the volcano.

The study by the U. S. Geological Survey aims to study how molten underground rock connects to volcanoes. The information might help in forecasting eruptions.

The Columbian reports the study also will measure fluctuations in the earth's magnetic field and seismic signals created by setting of explosive charges.

Cascades Volcano Observatory seismologist Seth Moran says in the future the study could expand to other volcanoes. He says he'd like to compare the magma systems of volcanoes in Washington and Oregon.
