PORTLAND -- Classes at Franklin High School got off to a somber start Monday.
Teachers informed students in their first period classes that Abukar Madey, 15, had been murdered over the weekend. Madey was a freshman.

“I went home early because I was crying and stuff,” said Sophmore Cynthia Magana.
She and other students said Madey was nice, outgoing and a good basketball player who planned on trying out for the team.
“He was a great kid, honestly. Outgoing. He was good at basketball,” said Mohamed Hussein.
Isiah Estupinian said he and his father would often play basketball with Madey at Lents Park.
“[He was] Just a nice kid. He was calm. You wouldn’t have thought you would have seen him getting shot at a max stop,” Estupinian said.
Police said Madey and 22-year-old Lucio Alejandro Ramirez-Navarro, also known as “Alex Ramirez,” were shot at the Holgate Transit Station late Friday night.
Ramirez, who investigators described as “documented member of a Hispanic street gang,” survived the shooting and was recovering in a Portland hospital.
Madey, however, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died Sunday.
As of Monday evening, investigators had not released a motive for the shooting or any suspect information. They declined to elaborate on the extent of the victims’ relationships to each other.
Investigators were still looking for witnesses to come forward.
