Students at Eastside Catholic in Sammamish, Wash., say they are staging a sit-in in protest after the vice principal was forced to resign.

Senior class vice president Julia Troy said Mark Zmuda is being forced to leave the school because he married a man.

The school confirmed that Zmuda resigned for marrying a man, which broke his contract according to a school spokesperson. Friday is his last day.

According to students, the archdiocese is requiring Zmuda to resign.

School spokesperson Sister Mary Tracy said it was "a church decision is not a school decision."

A student posted a petition asking for a change in the Roman Catholic Church's stance on gay marriage at Change.org. The petition already has almost 900 signatures.

Zmuda got married over the summer, but the school found out about the marriage in November.

Three hundred high schoolers are sitting in the cafeteria, refusing to go to class. Students say teachers are no longer forcing them to go to class.

Students at the school said they don't know how long the sit-in will last. Tomorrow is a half day at Eastside Catholic before the school's winter break begins.

A student at Holy Names made a sign to join in solidarity with Eastside Catholic students.

The students were also spreading the word on the social media site Twitter using the hashtag #KeepMrZ2013. Below is a selection of those posts:
