OREGON CITY, Ore. – A soccer coach accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old made his first appearance in court Thursday in Clackamas County.

Joseph Leonetti, 43, appeared via closed-circuit TV to a courtroom filled with family and friends and spoke just a few times to answer “yes” and “no” to the judge’s questions.

Leonetti is well-known in the soccer community. He was arrested in his Oregon City home Wednesday on five counts of sexual abuse, deputies said.

Leonetti played at the University of Portland before playing several games for the U.S. national team. He went on to coach at West Linn High School and most recently he was with the Eastside Timbers.

The Eastside Timbers club president was shocked by the allegations.

On Thursday, the judge reduced Leonetti’s bail to $250,000, which was originally set at $1.25 million.
