PORTLAND -- A man surrendered Monday evening after a standoff in which shots were fired at police from inside a Southeast Portland home.

Darwin Leroy Stauffer, 28, was taken into custody around 7:30 p.m, Monday. His bail was later set at more than $1 million.

In court Tuesday afternoon, Stauffer pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree robbery, three counts of first-degree kidnapping, and one count each of first-degree burglary and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The Portland Police Bureau's Special Emergency Reaction Team responded to a call in the 15800 block of SE Martins Street just after 3 p.m., according to Sgt. Pete Simpson.

Simpson said an officer tried to pull over a car believed to be stolen on SE Foster Road, when the driver took off and later crashed the car near SE 158th and Foster.

"I looked up and this car hit the tree and the door flies open," said one neighbor.  "This guy is taking off a million miles an hour."

A short time later, neighbors on SE Martins reported a bloody man on their porch. The two people from the home left the scene. One was injured, although there were no reports of anybody hit with gunfire.

As officers arrived, two shots reportedly came from the house where the suspect was believed to be. Neighbors were asked to stay indoors, police said.

"Initially the officers on scene reported that the shots came out of the house towards police officers," Simpson told KGW. "And we’re going to be operating under that belief that this person fired at police."

A section of the Springwater Corridor pathway was closed during the incident.
