EDITOR'S NOTE: The witness who shot the cell phone video was mistaken when he thought the mother left the children in the car while she got a haircut. We have removed that part of the story. The mother accidentally locked her keys in the car and recruited other witnesses to help smash the window open.

KATY, Texas -- Shoppers who thought they had no time to spare after noticing two kids in a hot jeep Monday afternoon took matters into their own hands.

The incident happened at a strip mall near North Fry Road and Little York.

Some of them tried to smash open the windows to try and free the small boy and girl.

“It was a crazy situation,” said Gabriel Del Valle, who used his cell phone to shoot video of the incident.

Del Valle said he stepped out of his nearby shop after hearing the kids crying out in desperation.

“The kids were in there crying,” said Del Valle. “I mean you would understand. It’s real hot.

He said one guy used a hammer to shatter the glass.

“And even then they could barely open the doors because there was a child lock on," he said. "Kids were in the crying.”

After several minutes, the kids were freed. D

Fortunately, it appears the children were unharmed.

Last week, a man in North Carolina sat in a hot car to demonstrate how excruciating it can be. He posted the video on YouTube in an attempt to prevent another child from dying.
