PORTLAND -- A 47-year-old sex offender has been arrested for sexually assaulting a woman near the Steel Bridge last month, police said.
The victim called 911 on March 11 to report a stranger had attacked her near the stairs at the east end of the bridge, said Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson.

"In addition to sexually assaulting the woman, the suspect stole her bank cards," Simpson said Friday. "Sex crimes detectives worked closely with the Sex Offender Registration Detail and Central Precinct to identify the suspect as Clarence Williams, a registered sex offender."
Williams was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of first-degree rape, first- and third-degree robbery, and aggravated identity theft.
"The Portland Police Bureau would like to remind community members that stranger-to-stranger sexual assaults are fortunately a rare occurrence and the Bureau makes every attempt to share information as soon as practicable," Simpson said.
The Sexual Assault Resource Center of Oregon (SARC) has a 24-hour support line at 503-640-5311.
The Portland Police Bureau WomenStrength and GirlStrength programs also provide free self-defense classes and personal safety workshops to people around the Portland area.
