OREGON CITY -- An Oregon City couple found guilty June 7 of criminal mistreatment for using faith instead of medicine to treat an eye condition for their child was sentenced Friday to 90 days in jail and three years of probation.
Timothy and Rebecca Wyland will have staggered jail sentences. The terms of their probation include providing medical care for daughter Alayna and a log of those treatments.
The defense tried to point out Friday morning that the Wylands have pledged to maintain medical care for their child and that the state was seeking "unwarranted punishment."
A jury deliberated for an hour and 15 minutes earlier this month before reaching their verdicts. Their decision was unanimous that Timothy and Rebecca Wyland were guilty of criminal mistreatment in the first degree.
Little Alayna Wyland suffered from a buildup of blood vessels around her left eye during the first few months of her life.
The Wylands did not take the stand during the trial.
