SALEM – A Salem woman is in intensive care after getting struck by a car in the fog Saturday evening, police said.
Sthefany Viorato-Navuaez, 18, was with two friends crossing Silverton Road near 47th Avenue when she was hit by a car heading east on Silverton Road. None of her friends was hit, said Don Thomson with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver, 39-year-old Robert Mallorie, immediately stopped to help Viorato-Navuaez. He then drove her to the hospital, Thomson said.
Mallorie told deputies he was driving about 35 mph in thick fog on Silverton Road. He hit Viorato-Navuaez as she started to cross the street and said he didn’t see her until he hit her, Thomson said.
Mallorie was fully cooperative with investigators and was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol. His 8-year-old daughter was in the car at the time, and was not hurt.
Deputies said Viorato-Navuaez and her friends were wearing dark clothing and did not press the crosswalk button to activate the lights.
Authorities do not know the extent of Viorato-Navuaez’s injuries.
