SALEM, Ore. (AP) — After waiting for nearly 70 years, an Oregon veteran has received three medals he earned while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Lt. Col. Kevin Dial with the Oregon Army National Guard pinned the medals on 86-year-old Donald Madsen on Sunday.

Madsen received the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and Prisoner of War Medal.

The Statesman Journal says  Madsen's friend encouraged him to find out what medals he was entitled to. Family and friends gathered what records they could find, took them to the state Department of Veterans Affairs and discovered Madsen earned three medals.

Madsen served in the Army's 346th Infantry Regiment, 87th Infantry Division.
