SALEM -- Police and a K-9 team are searching for a man considered "armed and dangerous" in the Salem area, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect was identified as Sir Diamond Damien Gipson, 20, and described as an African American man, around 5 foot 10 inches tall and weighing around 150 pounds.

Early Tuesday morning, officers were called to a Salem-area home on a report of a domestic disturbance involving Gipson and a woman and child. Officers were dispatched to the 4700 block of Lancaster Drive Northeast.

Detectives said they tried to arrest Gipson but he refused to cooperate. Police said he was holed up inside the home, reportedly armed with a weapon, but the mother and child were both safe.

A SWAT squad was called to the scene and area residents were evacuated or notified of the danger.

Hours later, SWAT officers cleared the scene after realizing that Gipson had somehow escaped.

Detectives said the area will remain closed to through traffic while they search for Gipson.  Streets affected include Portland Road NE and Hayesville Road NE; Portland Road NE and Lancaster Drive NE; Hayesville Road NE and Reimann Street NE, and Lancaster Drive NE and Ward Drive NE.

Anyone who has information that may help detectives capture Gipson was urged to call 911.
