HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- A large rock, described as being the size of a Volkswagen Beetle car, fell onto Interstate 84 about one mile west of Hood River Sunday afternoon.
No vehicles were damaged but the rock blocked one lane of traffic and it took crews with the Oregon Department of Transportation about two hours to remove the obstruction, using heavy equipment.
The rock fall was reported just after 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. The boulder apparently rolled off the bordering embankment, over a concrete barrier and landed in the right, eastbound lane.
Oregon State Police and ODOT urged motorists to be aware of potential road hazards during wet periods and high winds in the Columbia River Gorge and on other highways.
Anyone seeing a hazardous roadway condition or obstruction was asked to contact OSP dispatch or 9-1-1.
