PORTLAND -- A rental scam that lures victims into turning over personal data, even deposits, has surfaced in Portland.
The con artist takes a real home listing, then posts some details of the listing on Craigslist. The listing, however, has new contact information that leads the unsuspecting potential tenant to the con artist.
Often, the con artist says he or she is out of town, can't show the home, but asks for a rental application or a deposit.
Attorney General John Kroger had time-honored advice. "If it sounds to good to be true, it is."
Potential renters should try and meet in person with the agent or homeowner.
