PORTLAND – A six-month old puppy in a drainage well was pulled to safety by a Washington County deputy in the Bethany neighborhood Tuesday.
The Chihuahua/Yorkie mix named Popsicle had fallen behind a grate into a seven foot deep concrete hole and was trying to stay afloat in about two feet water.
Deputies said the puppy was dropping below the surface of the water – all while a car was parked on top of the metal grate covering.
A passerby was able to hold the puppy to the water’s edge with a stick until the vehicle was moved by the deputy.
The deputy was able to remove the grate, then using what police called a “dog pole,” Popsicle was pulled to safety.
He was returned to his 6-year-old owner, Macayla, cold, but in good health, police said.
