PORTLAND – A company based in Portland which designs technology for Smartphones and tablets is planning a major expansion.

Urban Airship is the silent partner to some of the nation’s biggest companies which design the instant notifications on apps that consumers sign up for, including sports score updates, breaking news and Groupon deals.

Urban Airship is only five years old but it’s already set to take off. On Wednesday, company officials announced $25 million in new funding that it will use, in part, to hire 40 new employees for its office in The Pearl.

This comes as other relatively new start-ups in Portland are also enjoying new funding to the tune of more than $100 million just this month alone.

“Mobile is such a huge opportunity. There are so many questions for these big established brands on how they're going to connect consumers through these devices,” explained Airship CEO Scott Kveton.

The company has offices in Portland, San Francisco, Palo Alto and London. Kveton said they hope to double the number of employees by 2014, bringing the total to 234.

As an added perk, employees get free breakfast every morning and a catered lunch three times a week.
