PORTLAND -- Portland Olympian Kara Goucher has announced she will not be running in the 2013 New York City Marathon.
In a blog post titled "Letting Go Of A Dream," Goucher said 2013 has been a difficult year that included a stress fracture in her right foot. She had to take time off from running.
"For those of you who don’t know me, this is a very big deal." she wrote. "I run every day. Every day. It makes me feel normal. Sane. I only took one week off after giving birth to my son before returning to running."
She added that she is still recovering, but is still far from 100 percent.
"I realize that my family, sponsors, and fans all want me to be healthy and run at my best," she added. "They don’t want to see me out there at 70 percent, trying to outsmart people rather than being able to freely run my own race."
Letting go of the hope of running the 2013 NYC Marathon was especially bitter, she said, because that's where she ran her first marathon. But she's already looking forward to 2014, and to the 2016 Olympics.
