PORTLAND – Portland teachers rallied Friday afternoon as contract talks between the teachers union and Portland Public Schools stood at deadlock. .
The two sides have 35 days to close a $200-million gap in negotiations. If a deal is not reached, teachers could strike just after winter break.

The rally will protest the school board’s “reckless and abrupt end to mediation,” said Portland Association of Teachers spokeswoman Gwen Sullivan.
The rally began around 4:15 p.m. near the southeast side of the Burnside Bridge.
Parents and other community members join in and show support for the teachers.
