PORTLAND -- The board of Portland Public Schools accepted the hotly debated teacher contract at Monday night's board meeting, approving new teacher hiring and an extension of the school year.

Last Thursday, the Portland Association of Teachers overwhelmingly voted in support of the contract.

The contract deal arrived at the eleventh hour on Feb. 18 after 10 months of negotiations, and just two days before a historic teacher strike was set to begin.

More: Teacher, PPS reach tentative agreement

Under the brokered terms, PPS has agreed to hire 150 more teachers, add two more days to the school year and give teachers a 2.3 percent annual raise for the next three years, among other changes. The addition of more teachers will reduce class sizes.
