GRAND CANYON, Ariz. – A Portland man died Tuesday while kayaking down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, the National Parks Service said Wednesday.
Around 6:30 p.m., 31-year-old Curtis Joyce was discovered capsized and unresponsive in his kayak near the Lower Whitmore camp in the canyon.
Rescuers performed CPR but were not able to resuscitate Joyce. He was part of a private river trip of nine kayakers nearing the end of a 12-day trip.
Because of approaching darkness, rangers could not fly into the canyon until Wednesday morning to recover Joyce's body.
The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner is investigation the death.
