PORTLAND – A man was forced to climb out a window to escape a house fire in Portland early Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. in a home at 14021 SE Main Street.
The man who lived there managed to escape the fast-moving flames by climbing out of a window. He told firefighters a smoke alarm woke him up and when he opened his bedroom door, he saw that his exit was blocked by fire. Then, he closed the door and fled out the window.
“Without a working smoke alarm, this man might not have escaped,” said Lt. Damon Simmons with Portland Fire & Rescue.
Investigators believe the fire was caused by lights in the Christmas tree. They said it caused $25,000 in damage and the home is now inhabitable.
