PORTLAND -- May 12-16 is the 51st National Small Business Week.

There is reason to celebrate in a big way, after all small business is the backbone of our economy.

Almost 97 percent of Oregon employers are small business and that means a quarter of a million jobs.

While the Small Business Administration defines a small business as having fewer than 500 employees, here in Portland, 98 percent of neighborhood businesses have five or fewer workers.

To celebrate this year, Portland's Midway District, around Southeast 122rd Avenue and Division Street are making every effort to get noticed. New colorful banners will fly this Friday. The theme is "The Way".

"It gives these small business a sense of place," said Lori Boisen, with the Division Midway Alliance. "And it's a way for us to support these businesses and draw attention to the fact that there are businesses here."

Venture Portland is giving small businesses window cards to display.

There will be different events all week long in different neighborhoods.
