PORTLAND - The first new streetcar built in the Portland-area has been delivered to the city, but along with it came an extra cost.

Portland City Commissioners on Wednesday agreed to spend $145,000 in oversight expenses for the streetcar built United Streetcar of Clackamas.

United has been behind schedule in delivering the cars that are supposed to help fill out the fleet for the eastside loop.

“This has been frustrating for everyone involved, including the people who want to have the streetcar come by on time, but this has been a success, even though there have been some bumps in the road,” Mayor Charlie Hales said.

A prototype streetcar has been pressed into service, but will be pulled to fix problems.

Hales says the new streetcars, being built in the United States for the first time in decades, is overall, a success story.
