PORTLAND – Drivers may be paying more at the pump if a Portland congressman’s bill goes through.
Representative Earl Blumenauer introduced legislation Tuesday to nearly double the federal gas tax.
The current federal tax of 18 cents per gallon has not increased since 1993. If H.R. 3638 passes, the cost would increase to 33 cents per gallon.
“The gas tax hasn’t been increased since the beginning of the Clinton administration,” said Blumenauer in a statement Wednesday. “Today, with inflation and increased fuel efficiency for vehicles, the average motorist is paying about half as much per mile as they did in 1993. It’s time for Congress to act."
Blumenauer said the government needs the extra cash to pay for transportation projects.
The American Trucking Association has endorsed his proposed bill.
