PORTLAND-- Portland mayoral candidate Jefferson Smith issued an apology on his Facebook page Friday afternoon in regards to a 1993 incident at an off-campus University of Oregon party.
The apology came one day after Smith lost endorsements form Portland police and firefighters' unions.
In the apology, Smith addresses his behavior shortly after news broke of the incident including his trying to contact the woman involved.
He also says the press conference and subsequent interviews after the news broke did not reflect the person he wants to be.
In the statement Smith expresses gratitude toward his friends, family and supporters and says he wants to move forward in talking about the city's future.
