PORTLAND – A sign proclaiming Portland "America's Bicycle Capital" has been painted over because it violated the city's sign code.
According to the code, the sign was too large for the space, in part because it did not replace an existing older sign. The words were painted over Monday, but the image above them--a green circle with a bicycle inside it--will remain on the building at Southwest 2nd Avenue and Ash Street.
The owner of Pedal Bike Tours, the business inside the building, said the sign was more a display of pride in Portland's bike-friendly culture than an advertisement.

Todd Roll said tourists loved to photograph the sign and people will be disappointed that it has been painted over.
Portlander Holly Rudolph even started a petition last week to keep the city from forcing the change, calling the decision "bureaucracy at its worst."
