PORTLAND -- A man was shot dead in Portland's St. Johns neighborhood Monday afternoon and nearby schools were briefly locked down as police searched the area for suspects.
Police said the shooting occurred around 2 p.m. in the 10000 block of North Burr Avenue near George Middle School. The Multnomah County Medical Examiner's office confirmed Tuesday that Donte Young, 33, died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Both George Middle School and nearby Roosevelt High School were placed on lock down as a precaution. Police said students and staff at both schools were safe and the lockdowns were lifted by 3:30 p.m. Monday.
Witness Shannon Fairchild told KGW he'd seen a group of eight men arguing in the street over money. Moments later, he heard a single gunshot.
"They were talking about 'Go get the money, money.'' Fairchild said. "Then, when I went to the bus stop, not even two minutes later: Pop!"
Investigators were unsure if the shooting was gang-related. Officers made a search of the area but have made no arrests. Police were still searching for suspects Tuesday.
After hearing about the shooting, many parents were worried for their children.
"Just how stupid can people be these days," said Kristin Edwards. "Just a little fist fight can turn into a murder. It's ridiculous! Next to a school, that's just crazy."
Tammy Hart feared a child could have been accidentally shot.
"It just takes one bullet," said Hart. "They don't know if there are children out here or on break and it could be an innocent child that could be hit."
George Middle School reported a slight drop in attendance Tuesday, but not as much as officials expected.
Investigators don't know what prompted the shooting and continue to investigate.
