PORTLAND – Police swarmed to Old Town Portland after hearing what they thought were gunshots early Sunday morning.
Several people who live in the area of Southwest 4th Avenue and Southwest Everett Street thought the gunfire was fireworks.
Police in the entertainment district also heard the shots just after 2 a.m. and ran to the area. There were holes in a restaurant awning, but officers didn't find anyone who had been shot.
"(Officers) did locate evidence of gunfire so we do know there were shots fired, and based on the preliminary investigation, the Gang Enforcement Team came out to process the scene," said Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police.
Karla Powell lives in the Pacific Towers Apartments and her courtyard overlooks the area where the shooting happened. She heard it all from her bedroom and says she was planning to call officers because it sure sounded like someone was hit. Then a car sped off.
"Then I heard lots and lots of screaming, female, high-pitched hysterical screaming,” Powell said. "And then I heard the squealing of tires and a quick speed away…and then it was eerily silent."
