PORTLAND -- Police have charged a 21-year-old man with aggravated murder after the body of a man was found in a Pearl District apartment building at NW 9th and Lovejoy.
Charles Joseph Lake (pictured below) was also charged with unlawful use of a weapon and was being held with no bail on the aggravated murder charge. He'll make his first court appearance Monday.
Officers were called to the Station Place Tower after reports of a disturbance and found a 64-year-old man dead in one of the units, said Sgt. Pete Simpson.
Residents said they heard a commotion and asked police to check on one of their neighbors.
The officers sent to the apartment called in homicide investigators and criminalists to what Simpson said was "clearly a crime scene of some sort." The victim's identity has not yet been released.
Simpson says the suspect and victim were very recent acquaintances. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner Saturday.
"Everybody’s pretty well shaken up because this is something we don’t expect because this is a 55 and older apartment,” neighbor Gregory Strasser said. ”Everybody, for the most part, gets along with everybody else, people say hi to each other every day, it’s very friendly."
The investigation included a review of the building's entryway security videos, he said. Tenants were also being interviewed.
The Station Place Tower has 176 units intended for people 55 and older, according to a REACH Community Development website. Seventy-six of the units have subsidized rates.
