PORTLAND -- Two pedestrians were robbed at gunpoint in Northeast Portland early Tuesday morning, police said.

The two robberies happened within half an hour of each other and police are trying to determine if they are related.

Shortly before 1 a.m., a 39-year-old man was unlocking his bike from a bike rack on Northeast 43rd Avenue and Northeast Fremont Street when he was robbed at gunpoint by two men, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau.

The victim told police one suspect stood by with a handgun while the other suspect rifled through his backpack and took his wallet and a pair of plaid pants. He told police the suspects then took off on foot, Simpson said.

Police searched the neighborhood and found the victim's wallet and pants. The victim's debit card was taken from his wallet.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m., police responded to the report of a second armed robbery at Northeast 50th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard, Simpson said.

Authorities said the victim told them he was walking on Sandy Boulevard when he was approached from behind by three men.

"I don't hear well, but I could feel the vibe," said Michael Staley.

Staley threw down his cane and tried to run but the suspects caught up with him and one of the men pointed a gun at him. One of the suspects took the victim's wallet and all three suspects ran away after the victim flagged down a passing taxi cab, Simpson said.

Police searched the neighborhood and found a pellet gun that may have been used by the suspects.

"Do I feel blessed or cursed," said Staley.  "I feel blessed."

Robbery detectives believe the two cases may be related and would like to hear from anyone with information.
