VANCOUVER – A prolific car thief who rides around on a moped as he searches for each new target has managed to elude police and now they’re asking for the public’s help catching him.

Mathew Michaelson is the suspect in several car thefts and attempted car thefts in the Vancouver area, police said.

Officers have spotted him in the act on a couple of occasions, but he always manages to get away on his moped.

In one of those incidents, officers said they tried to pull him over in a stolen vehicle and “the suspect swerved as if to run over one Officer, swerved around a patrol vehicle, fled from the area at a high rate of speed and was able to elude police,” said Kim Kapp, a spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department.

Investigators said they have probable cause for arresting Michaelson on several charges, including attempted auto theft, assault, felony elude, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving, and vehicle prowl. There is also an outstanding felony warrant for Michaelson's arrest.

Anyone with information that could help police capture Michaelson was urged to the Vancouver Police Department Tip Line at (360) 487-7399.
