VANCOUVER -- A transient who led Clark County sheriff's deputies on a high speed chase in a stolen car early Friday morning was arrested with the help of a tracking dog after he fled the car.
Deputy Chris Luque saw a car speeding toward him about 1 a.m. in the 9500 block of N.E. 25th Avenue. The deputy turned in pursuit. The suspect's car turned east on N.E. 99th Street and continued speeding.
The driver then turned south on N.E. 28th Place. As Luque made the turn, he saw a man running from the car, which kept rolling until it hit a garage in the 9700 block of N.E. 28th Place.
Other deputies arrived to form a perimeter. Deputy Rick Osborne's tracking dog Kane led deputies a block south and to the back side of a condominium,the dog keyed on a second-story balcony. Deputies woke up the residents of the condo, who let them in and the suspect was found on the balcony hiding behind a barbecue.
Matthew M. Clark, 40, was taken to the Clark County jail and held on accusations of possession of a stolen vehicle and burglary. Accusations of reckless driving, hit and run and driving while suspended will be forwarded to the district attorney's office.
