EUGENE -- Two men tried to rob a Dutch Bros. coffee shop Wednesday and police say one of them was shot dead by a barista.

The shootout took place about 9 p.m. at a Dutch Bros. near the University of Oregon campus at Franklin and Walnut.

Police identified the dead man as Sirus Combs, 27, of Eugene, and said he has an extensive criminal record. The name of the barista has not been released. Police described him only as a white man in  his 20s.

The suspect had previously been convicted of drunk driving, unlawful possession of a weapon and attempting to elude police.

In a prepared statement released at noon Thursday, police said there was definitely a shootout between two people, but declined to provide more details.

Dutch Bros. issued the following statement via a public relations firm.

"Dutch Bros. can confirm that an armed robbery took place at the Franklin Boulevard location of Dutch Bros. Coffee in Eugene on the evening of Wednesday, November 24. Dutch Bros. is fully cooperating with law enforcement and until the investigation is complete, the company will not be speaking publicly about the incident.  We will assist the Eugene Police Department in any way possible. "

A witness counted 18 police cars responding to the shooting. "We left the restaurant, came down the alley here. There was a gentleman here that said he heard multiple gunshots, sounded like one series then a break, then a small other series."

Combs body was in the entryway of the drive-through coffee stand, police said.

The second suspect got away. He was described as a white man with blonde hair, wearing jeans, brown hiking shoes and zip-up 'puffy' coat with fold-down collar.
