BEND, Ore. -- The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office says a 52-year-old Bend, Ore., man suffered only minor injuries when his glider crashed on a Forest Service road near Tumalo Falls in central Oregon.

Deputy Liam Klatt says pilot John Bentley took off from Bend Airport on Friday afternoon and had been in the air about an hour when he lost lift and tried to land on a nearby road. The glider has a wingspan of more than 66 feet. It clipped a small tree as it neared the ground and crashed onto a Forest Service road.

The deputy says Bentley has about 30 years of experience in both gliders and powered aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the crash.
