PORTLAND – A woman died and four others were injured after a car hit a group of people in a two-vehicle crash in Old Town early Sunday morning, police said.
Police arrested 42-year-old Brent Warstler of Cornelius on multiple charges.
Rebbecca Bray, 20, of Gresham was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said she had been celebrating a close friend's 21st birthday.
Just after 2:30 a.m., Warstler was driving a pickup and ran a red light, then crashed into a cab driven by 41-year-old Angel Olvera, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland Police.
The crash caused the truck to veer onto the sidewalk and hit Bray and 21-year-old Brandi Butner of Fairview, Simpson said. The two had been walking to meet their designated driver after celebrating Butner's birthday together.
Butner suffered severe injuries, but was expected to survive, Simpson said. Her father told KGW the family is struggling to come to terms with what happened.
Three passengers in Warstler's truck were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Both Warstler and Olvera stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, Simpson said. Warstler (pictured at right) was charged with manslaughter, assault, reckless driving, and DUII. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail and will appear in court Tuesday.
