PORTLAND -- Portland State University faculty, staff and students received an email from the school Wednesday evening warning of threats by a graduate student who has been banned from the campus.
Detectives said Friday weapons were recovered during their investigation, but gave no other details.
The campus public safety office also posted the warning online, along with a photograph of 33-year-old Henry Liu. He has not been charged with a crime and does not appear to have a criminal record.
The email said that Liu had made "threats of violence against the Portland State University community."
It went on to say that Liu and his family "have been cooperating with officials regarding the resolution of this matter."
PSU would not elaborate on details of the alleged threats, except to say that there were numerous threats and some were specific.
A directory search showed that Liu attended PSU from the fall of 2011 to spring 2012 and was majoring in conflict resolution. Friends told KGW his goal was to go to law school and his wife lives overseas.
"He wasn't dangerous. He wasn't mentally unstable or anything like that," said friend Scott Uhls.
KGW also tried to talk to Liu for comment, but he could not be reached.
Campus security said they were working with mental health experts and Portland police.
The student has been excluded from PSU and prohibited from coming to campus or any PSU facility. PSU said federal law required that they issue the warning.
In the email, they said anyone who sees Liu on campus, or has any significant concerns about their own personal safety should call 911.
"University Administration, the Portland Police Bureau and Campus Public Safety are continuing to monitor the situation and do not believe that the normal operations of the University should be interrupted at this time," the email stated.
People with further questions were told they could call PSU's Campus Public Safety office at 503-725-4407, Student Health and Counseling Services at 503-725-2800 or the Office of Human Resources at 503-725-4926.
