PORTLAND -- The Oregon Zoo's 11-day-old elephant calf "Lily" is ready to make her public debut Friday.

"Rose-Tu and her new calf will be together in the indoor viewing gallery of the zoo’s Asian elephant exhibit," zoo spokesman Hova Najarian announced Tuesday afternoon.

Viewing hours are scheduled from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. starting Friday, but are subject to change if zoo staffers feel the elephants need more quiet time. Any schedule changes will be posted on OregonZoo.org as soon as possible, Najarian said.

"In an effort to accommodate everyone, the zoo will be admitting 30 people at a time into the viewing gallery for five minutes each," he added. "Visitors who wish to spend more time can get in line again. If the line gets really long, not everyone may be admitted."

He says Lily is eating and sleeping well, according to zoo keepers, and Rose-Tu has been showing good maternal instincts and remaining attentive to her new calf.
