PORTLAND -- Two sisters from Oregon whose father and great grandfather earned Purple Hearts got to take part in an honorary celebration decades in the making Wednesday.

Frank Matson and Jacob Garrett earned the Purple Hearts in active duty during World War One and the Civil War, but they died before getting the awards.

They weren’t forgotten, though.

Congressman Earl Blumenauer presented the medals to Rosalee Schiewe and her sister Wednesday. The pair had been trying for many years to see their father, and great grandfather properly recognized.

“We were so young when he died that anything like this is part of being with our father,” Schiewe said. “We both loved him very much and this brings us a little closer to daddy.”

The family approached Blumenauer in April for help. Now both men will forever be honored as heroes.
