PORTLAND, Ore. -- Utility crews expect to be busy this weekend as an ice-storm warning covers a wide swath of the Willamette Valley.
As trees snapped and power lines fell, the Emerald People's Utility District on Saturday reported widespread outages throughout rural communities surrounding the Eugene-Springfield metro area.
According to the utility, at least 7,000 customers in communities such as Cottage Grove, Pleasant Hill, Marcola and Dexter lost power because of downed lines.
The Register-Guard newspaper reported that 2,000 customers served by the Springfield Utility Board were without power and another 500 customers served by the Eugene Water & Electric Board.
Meanwhile, Portland General Electric says more than 300 customers lacked lights early Saturday evening, mostly in Clackamas and Multnomah counties.
The National Weather Service is forecasting an ice accumulation up to a half-inch in Portland, which will likely cause more outages.
