KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) — A man has escaped from the Klamath County Jail in Klamath Falls while taking out the garbage.
Sheriff Tim Evinger tells The Herald and News newspaper (http://bit.ly/PTBnyw) the Thursday morning escape is the first since 1989.
Evinger says a helicopter has joined the search of the area around the jail.
Evinger says 25-year-old Kenneth Robert Banes was being escorted into the jail yard to dump garbage as part of a work detail when he somehow got under or over a fence.
Banes was sentenced to three years in prison for a number of vehicle thefts and burglaries. He was in the county jail for violating his parole.
