SALEM -- An inmate died of natural causes Saturday at the Oregon State Penitentiary, exactly nine years after he was put on death row, officials said.
Allen Gary Zweigart, 64, was convicted of hiring a hitman to kill his wife, and then shooting her himself when the would-be hitman couldn't go through with it, according to The Oregonian.
Zweigart was sentenced in 2004 on 17 charges, including aggravated murder, robbery, kidnapping, conspiracy and solicitation charges. He was convicted on all counts and sentenced to death.
He entered death row on December 14, 2004. He died of natural causes at 12:35 p.m. on December 14, 2013, said OSP spokeswoman Michelle Dodson.
