BETHANY, Ore. -- What started as a welfare check in Bethany Sunday night ended with a deputy injured and a man in the hospital, authorities said.
The deputy was checking on a man at the Bethany Meadows Apartments, according to Sgt. Vance Stimler of the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
When deputies arrived to check on the 50-year-old man he opened the door and moved toward them with a knife, injuring one of them, Stimler said.
One of the two deputies then shot the man. He was taken to a nearby hospital.
The sheriff's office did not release the names of those involved in the incident.
