PORTLAND -- One person was shot and killed in North Portland Monday afternoon and the suspect was on the loose, police said.
A suspect description has not been released. The victim was identified as 24-year-old Andrew Coggins.
Police were called just before 3 p.m. to the report of a shooting in the 4700 block of North Trenton Street, said Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson.
Officers at the scene found one gunshot victim and began CPR until medical personnel could respond, he said.
The victim, described only as a man, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to Portland Fire & Rescue Lt. Rich Chatman.
Police searched the area for a suspect but did not find him. Additional patrols will remain in the area, according to Sgt. Greg Stewart with the Portland Police Bureau.
“Our primary focus really needs to be on keeping people safe,” Stewart said. “We’ve already been increasing our presence in the area. We also have officers dedicated to this particular neighborhood who work here day in and day out.”
Anyone with information that may help investigators was encouraged to call the detective division at 503-823-0400.
Portland Mayor Charlie Hales said the shooting reminds everyone "that far, far too many people in our community are the victims of gun violence. Gun violence is a public health crisis, and we as a society need to address this complex epidemic."
